Peruvians residing in 79 countries vote in 2020 parliamentary elections

Peruvian citizens residing in 79 foreign nations head to the polls on the occasion of the 2020 extraordinary parliamentary elections, the National Office of Electoral Processes (ONPE) reported on Sunday.

The elections were already held in the following cities: Seville, Almeria, Barcelona, and Madrid (Spain); Berlin, Frankfurt, and Hamburg (Germany); Brussels, Liege, and Ghent (Belgium); and Luxembourg.

Also, Peruvians went to the polls in Lisbon (Portugal); Zurich, Bern, and Geneva (Switzerland); Moscow (Russia); Czech Republic; Poland; Finland; Norway; Indonesia; Thailand; Philippines; Ukraine; and China, among others.

A total of 24,799,384 Peruvian voters are required to go to the polls in order to elect 130 Congress members for the 2020-2021 period.


The five nations with the largest number of voters are the United States (304,860), Spain (145,804), Argentina (141,566), Chile (113,083), and Italy (92,020).

On the other hand, Macedonia, Vietnam, Malaysia, Algeria, Ukraine, and Egypt are among the 15 countries with the lowest number of registered voters overseas, with less than 100 electors each.

Peru

Voting started at 08.00 a.m. on Peruvian soil in order to define the representatives at Congress thru July 2021.

For these elections —which run until 4:00 p.m. (Peruvian time)— some 84,000 voting tables are installed in more than 5,400 polling stations nationwide and overseas.

In-person electronic districts are implemented in 39 districts of the country. 21 are located in Lima, 2 in Callao, and 16 outside the capital city.

The new 130 legislators will serve the remaining period of the 2016-2021 legislative tenure, following the dissolution of Congress.
