Peru's specialty coffees make podium at international contest in U.S.

Coffees from northern and southern Peru obtained second and third place in the fourth edition of SPP Coffee Awards, a Small Producers' Symbol contest held in the United States, Peru's Exports and Tourism Promotion Board (PromPeru) reported on Friday.

The outstanding national participation was led by Agraria Cafetalera San Fernando (Cusco) and Agraria de Servicios Multiples El Milagro (Cajamarca) Cooperatives, which won second and third place, respectively. 

It must be noted that Peru entered the competition as the three-time champion.

The SPP Coffee Awards were held in Eugene —one of the largest cities in the State of Oregon— and witnessed the participation of 65 organizations representing of 400,000 families among 15 countries in Latin America, Asia, and Africa.

In this fourth edition, the SPP network of small-producer organizations organized a Q-grader cupping panel —following the SCA protocol and adapted to prevent COVID-19— with samples of certified organic green coffee delivered by SPP producer organizations.

Cusco's participation

For its part, the San Fernando Cooperative —representative of the South Macro Region— is part of the Export Route for Specialty Coffee, where it receives specialized assistance in pre-fair technical content, corporate image, sustainability, and innovation.
