Peru's President: The events that marked his first 100 days in office

The President of the Republic Francisco Sagasti celebrates 100 days leading the Transition and Emergency Government, which he assumed on November 17, 2020 —after protests that had prompted the resignation of Manuel Merino from the post.

As is known, Mr. Sagasti was elected by the Congress of the Republic to the highest office in the nation.

After being sworn, the Head of State affirmed that the challenges facing his administration were to guarantee the 2021 general elections, as well as to counter the health and economic crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Below is the list of events that have marked his first 100 days in office:

November 18, 2020

The President of the Republic swore in the members of his Ministerial Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Violeta Bermudez.

Interior Minister Ruben Vargas would resign 14 days later and replaced by Cluber Aliaga, who also stepped down from the post after five days. Lastly, Jose Elice was appointed to lead the Interior Ministry. He remains in the post.

December 3, 2020

With 111 votes in favor, Congress granted a vote of confidence to Prime Minister Bermudez's Ministerial Cabinet, after listening to the Government's main lines of action.

January 6, 2021

President Francisco Sagasti announced that the purchase of a first batch of COVID-19 vaccines from the Chinese laboratory Sinopharm was completed.

January 26, 2021

In a televised Address to the Nation, the President announced that 10 Peruvian regions —including Metropolitan Lima and Callao— were entering a mandatory quarantine as of January 31 to face the new coronavirus wave.

February 7, 2021

The first batch of COVID-19 vaccines arrived from Beijing. It consisted of 300,000 doses.

The remaining 700,000 doses landed in Lima six days later, completing the first one million offered by Sinopharm for February.

As is known, the total agreement is for 38 million doses.

February 9, 2021

The vaccination against COVID-19 begins for health personnel in charge of facing the pandemic on the frontline.

February 15, 2021

The President reported that former Health Minister Pilar Mazzetti and other people —including public servants— took advantage of their position and were vaccinated against COVID-19 outside clinical trials.

Therefore, the Head of State expressed his indignation and advanced the implementation of an investigation.
