Peruvian President Francisco Sagasti on Friday participated virtually in the 15th Pacific Alliance Summit along with his counterparts Sebastian Piñera (Chile), Ivan Duque (Colombia), and Manuel Lopez Obrador (Mexico).

On this occasion, the Heads of State reaffirmed their commitment to continue strengthening regional cooperation in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In his first speech, Peru's top official expressed to Ecuadorian President Lenin Moreno and Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong his nation's willingness to support the incorporation of Ecuador as a Full Member, and of the Asian country as an Associate State of the Pacific Alliance.

Likewise, the dignitary proposed that this regional integration mechanism pay more attention to the issue of cooperation in science, technology and innovation, considering health-related challenges, the sanitary emergency and climate change.

At the end of the presidential meeting, Mr. Sagasti signed —with his counterparts from Chile, Colombia, and Mexico— the Presidential Declarations on Regional Digital Market and the boost towards Digital Transformation, as well as on Gender Equality in the regional bloc.

Pacific Alliance

Created in 2011, the Pacific Alliance is an integration initiative focused on reducing trade barriers, as well as fostering the free circulation of goods, services, capitals, and people across its territories.

The bloc relies on observer countries, and it has become the axis of a new way of doing business in the continent.

On an annual basis, the Pacific Alliance rotates the pro-tempore presidency among its members. On this occasion, Chile handed over the pro-tempore presidency to Colombia.
