The President of the Republic, Jose Maria Balcazar, stated on Tuesday that the Government will provide all the necessary support to make the Chonta Dam a reality for the people of Cajamarca region, in northern Peru.

The Head of State participated in the ceremony during which the project was transferred from the Cajamarca Province Municipality to the Central Government.

Within this framework, the top official emphasized that this step will help solve the area's water supply needs after many years of waiting.

"We are on a day of transcendental importance for Cajamarca. After so many years, this dam is finally beginning to show signs of a solution," he said.

After thanking Mayor Eduardo Quiroz, the President recalled that the long-standing aspiration to build the dam dates back to previous municipal administrations.

The President also expressed hope that Peru will see more initiatives of this kind.

The Chonta Dam will make it possible to regulate and store water from the river of the same name, strengthening Cajamarca's water security, as well as ensuring greater water availability for agricultural irrigation and productive activities.

It will benefit more than 322,000 residents and 5,200 hectares of farmland, contributing to agricultural, economic, and social development.

This event was attended by Prime Minister Luis Arroyo; Deputy Family Farming and Agricultural Infrastructure-Irrigation Minister Orlando Chirinos; and Cajamarca Mayor Eduardo Quiroz.
