Peruvian President Martin Vizcarra on Tuesday affirmed that authorities should be aware that they are servants of the people, who elect them in democracy during an electoral process.

During his visit to Tamshiyacu, a locality in the rainforest region of Loreto, the Head of State noted that the population is the basis of democracy, not the authorities, since the latter are elected by the population.

"Authorities could not be elected without you. On April 11, we are going elect a new President, new legislators, new people in general because reelection is not allowed, as well as new blood, young people, and hardworking women," he expressed.

According to the statesman, this is an opportunity for change, to have the fresh, good, and honest people the country demands, and this depends on everyone because their votes will determine who will rule the nation.

Therefore, he called on Peruvians to prepare ahead of time, evaluate parties and candidates, and then vote and oversee their work.

"Thus, the authorities will work hand in hand with the population and will be aware that they are servants of the people instead of making use of them. That is the purpose of elections and democracy," he pointed out.

Remarks were made as he participated in a ceremony to present the executing unit of the Noa Jayatai-Mujer (Woman) project —the first executing unit made up of indigenous women from the Peruvian Amazon.

Peru's top official was accompanied by Ministers Patricia Donayre (Development and Social Inclusion) and Carlos Estremadoyro (Transport and Communications).
