Peru's PM: Executive Branch will not tolerate disrespect for Armed Forces

Prime Minister Violeta Bermudez has affirmed that the Executive Branch will not tolerate any disrespect for the Armed Forces.

Remarks were made while commenting on the letters issued by retired Armed Force officers who intend to incite members of the Army, Air Force, and Navy to violate the democratic values.

In this sense, the high-ranking official indicated that the Public Ministry is in possession of this letter and will conduct an investigation to determine if the contents are illegal.

"As the Executive Branch, we cannot tolerate this lack of respect for our Armed Forces, which in recent years have proven an absolute commitment to democratic values," she said in remarks to RPP radio and TV station.

Likewise, the Cabinet chief explained that the letter contained only one illegible signature and a DNI (ID card) number.

"The people who have written this letter have been warned: we will firmly ensure respect for the rule of law, democratic order, and our Armed Forces," she pointed out.

Furthermore, the Prime Minister requested Peruvian citizens and political parties to be patient and await the presidential runoff election results.

"Electoral organizations are doing their job. They are taking longer than expected because this has been a very intense race (…) I ask all of you for patience," Bermudez said.

In reference to the mobilizations planned for today, the

Government official stated that no demonstrations should be held due to the risks posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

She added that —due to these calls for demonstrations— the National Police of Peru has been ordered to guard vaccination centers.
