Prime Minister Violeta Bermudez on Thursday affirmed that tourism is an activity essential for the Peruvian economy due to its important contribution in terms of income and jobs.

Within this framework, the high-ranking official stated that —as a priority— domestic tourism will be promoted, while the inbound one gets back on track.

"Progressively, we will resume tourism activities in 22 protected natural areas, with optimal sanitary conditions, as well as adequate services for national and foreign visitors," she said.

Likewise, the Cabinet chief stressed that the Safe Travels stamp —which was awarded to Peru— is a certification that classifies the country as a world's safe destination. It was granted by the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC), with the purpose of generating confidence among national and foreign visitors.

"The fact that tourist destinations receive these certifications, in compliance with the approved sectoral protocols, and specifically the Health Guidelines against COVID-19 for tourist destinations, will support the reactivation of this sector," she concluded.

Prior to her presentation, the Prime Minister held meetings with various Congress members, which she deemed as positive.
