Prime Minister Violeta Bermudez on Thursday met with representatives of indigenous organizations to coordinate actions aimed to assist the indigenous peoples of Peru's Ucayali region and reaffirm the commitment, so that these communities are immunized during the second phase of vaccination against COVID-19.

The meeting was attended by the Chairmen of the Inter-ethnic Association for the Development of the Peruvian Jungle (Aidesep) Lizardo Cauper; Aidesep Ucayali Regional Organization (ORAU) Berlin Dikes; and the Regional Coordinator at the Confederation of Amazonian Nationalities of Peru (Conap) in Ucayali Limber Zumaeta.

In this regard, the General Director of Intercultural Citizenship of the Ministry of Culture Margarita Huaman mentioned that —since last year— they have been working on the protection of indigenous peoples, in order to reinforce preventive and containment information against the pandemic.

Likewise, it was announced that —through Culture Ministry's intercultural operators based in Ucayali— these efforts will remain in place, always in coordination with indigenous organizations.

At the end of the meeting, attendees were informed about development of almost 250 information banners on COVID-19 care, which are prepared in nine indigenous languages of the eastern region: Amawaka, Yaminahua, Shipibo-Konibo, Yine, Matsigenka, Cashinahua, Asheninka, Kakataibo, and Ashaninka.

After coordinating with indigenous organizations and intercultural operators, these materials will be delivered to native communities with the aim of disseminating the importance of the correct use of face masks; hand-washing; and physical isolation measures, among other actions.
