Foreign Trade and Tourism Minister Roberto Sanchez on Wednesday reported that tourism activity is in frank recovery in Peru by stressing that over 1.3 million foreign tourists have visited this country.

"Tourism is in a frank recovery (process); we welcome a set of laws that have been approved; there is a bill that is ready for publication, which is the Community Tourism Law," he said.

During a conference from the Presidency of the Council of Ministers in Lima, the Cabinet member pointed out that other regulations have also been issued to reactivate this sector in a sustained manner.

"We welcome (the fact) that we have already exceeded the mark of 1.3 million foreign tourists; we welcome (the fact) that domestic tourism has already exceeded 15 million travelers to destinations, including provinces and regions of the country," he specified.

Likewise, the minister indicated that the need to rethink the tourism activity in Peru was addressed last Tuesday.

"Yesterday, within the framework of World Tourism Day, there was a lot of talk about the need to rethink tourism, that means the intergovernmental institutionality of the Government, the State along with businesspeople, (and) civil society. We are prioritizing being up to tourism so that the reactivation is effectively more sustainable and goes from less to more," he expressed.

Top Green Destinations

The Mincetur head highlighted the fact that the Top 100 Green Destinations organization has been able to identify nine green tourist destinations in Peru, where tourism becomes a sustainable practice tool.

These are: Pacaya Samiria National Reserve (Loreto); Tingo Maria National Park (Huanuco); Paracas National Reserve (Ica); Bahuaja Sonene National Park (Puno-Madre de Dios); Pomac Forest Historic Sanctuary Lambayeque); Manu National Park (Cusco-Madre de Dios); Tambopata National Reserve (Madre de Dios); Alto Mayo Tarapoto (San Martin); Colca and the Valley of the Volcanoes (Arequipa).

"This is very important; tomorrow, there will be an awarding event featuring authorities from these sectors and these green destinations important to reactivate tourism," he underlined.

The government official also highlighted the agreement signed with CAF to reach an investment worth some US$10 million so as to promote digital connectivity in the tourism sector.
