The European Union is a great strategic partner of Peru in the fight against organized crime, such as money laundering and illicit drug trafficking, Interior Minister Vicente Romero has affirmed.

During the closing of the "Europe - United States - Peru Shared Vision Seminar on Money Laundering," Romero highlighted the continuous European support in the fight against these scourges, which is evidenced in constant training for Peru's police personnel.

The Interior sector's head stressed that this type of training, as well as the seminar closed last Thursday, allows a valuable exchange of experiences and provides better insights on how to face new crime modalities in Peru and other countries.

"Spaces like this are of vital importance and enable a new observation of money laundering around the world; they also enable us to get to know how we should approach the new modalities that criminals use to hide ill-gotten gains," Romero expressed.

Importance of meeting and agreement signing

Minister Romero emphasized the importance of this meeting and reminded event attendees that strategies are generated from the Interior sector to fight money laundering and other illicit acts, with the aim of dismantling dangerous criminal organizations that commit them.

He added that, as part of these strategies, investigation manuals on the fight against money laundering were crafted, as well as various formats and protocols, in order to unify investigation criteria for this and other areas.

The seminar began on May 30. It was organized by the European Union's Support Project for the Fight against Illicit Drug Traffic and Organized Crime in Peru and by the Interior Ministry's General Directorate against Organized Crime.

EU Ambassador to Peru Gaspar Frontini, Attorney General Patricia Benavides, ambassadors, and representatives of accredited diplomatic missions in Peru, among other authorities, participated in the closing event.

Following this ceremony held in Lima, the Interior minister and the Attorney General signed a bilateral cooperation agreement for the formation of specialized multidisciplinary teams against crime.

Thanks to this instrument, the special teams will focus their efforts on combating human trafficking, environmental crimes, qualified homicide or contract killings against members of indigenous communities.
