Peru's imports grow 44.1% in Jan-Aug 2021

10:54 | Lima, Oct. 11.

Peruvian imports amounted to US$32.7 billion between January and August this year, a 44.1% growth compared to the same period in 2020, the Peruvian Foreign Trade Society (ComexPeru) has reported.

"Most indicators show a rapid recovery of the national economy, and imports are no stranger to this," it said.

ComexPeru noted that the Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF) predicts that the value of imports will increase 14.6% this year.

Regarding their origin, it emphasized that China was the main source of Peruvian imports in January-August this year, with imports totaling US$9.3 billion (up 48.1%).

Besides China, the top 5 sources of Peruvian imports include the United States (with imports totaling US$6.03 billion; up 40.9%), Brazil (US$2.02 billion; up 57.8%), Argentina (US$1.3 billion; up 32.6%), and Mexico (US$1.2 billion; up 34.5%).

"It should be pointed out that the principal goods imported from China were capital goods, which accounted for 43.2% of our purchases from the Asian giant, while in the case of the United States and Brazil, most of our imports included intermediate goods, which represented 72% and 45% of Peru's imports from said countries, respectively," ComexPeru reported.

Type of imports

On the other hand, it noted that —depending on the type of imports— purchases of intermediate goods accounted for 47.3% (US$15.4 billion), those of capital goods accounted for 31% (US$10.1 billion), and those of consumer goods accounted for 21.7% (US$7.1 billion) of total imports.

"In detail, imports of intermediate goods showed greater dynamism, as they grew 53.1% over the January-August period in 2020," ComexPeru emphasized.
