Peru's Health Min: We hope all older adults will be vaccinated thru July 2021

Supported by the territorial vaccination strategy against COVID-19, Peru hopes to have all older adults immunized until July, Health Minister Oscar Ugarte has affirmed.

This will be possible because —as announced by President Francisco Sagasti— Peru will receive 450,000 Pfizer vaccine doses per week starting May, the ministry's head emphasized.

From April 16

This new strategy will allow faster progress to be made in terms of immunizing and reaching out to a greater number of Peruvian citizens, as people will get vaccinated in the districts where they reside.

"It starts (...) on April 16, with those over 80 years old," he indicated.

Likewise, the Minsa head specified that vaccination —at the beginning of this new scheme— includes the following dates: April 16, 17, and 18. Yet even those citizens, who miss their appointments, may receive the dose on April 19 or 20.

Furthermore, the high-ranking official explained that

102,181 adults aged above 80 are expected to get vaccinated during the initial five days in 22 districts of Lima and Callao.

The vaccination center, the date, and time can be easily confirmed through the Pongo el Hombro (I lend the shoulder) app that was put into operation on Wednesday morning.

Citizens aged 70-79

"Supported by this modality, in Lima we will have protected all people over 80 years of age from now thru the end of the month. Meanwhile, in the first week of May, we will launch the immunization of people aged between 70 and 79 and then those between 60 and 69 years old," Ugarte informed.

People with comorbidity

The Health minister also referred to the immunization of people with comorbidities and detailed that an ethics committee advises the government on how to define which groups will have priority, as well as the sequence of this vaccination.

"All this will be possible because —as we have already anticipated— starting this month Peru receives 200,000 Pfizer doses per week, followed by 450,000 weekly doses starting May to reach June with 580,000 doses per week," the minister underlined.
