Peru's Health Min: COVID-19 figures in decline as population follow preventive measures

COVID-19 figures are going down throughout the country, which shows that the population is following the instructions. It must be noted that the cases are decreasing because people are behaving responsibly, Health Minister Pilar Mazzetti affirmed.

"We have to be prepared for whatever may come next month. We will discover it day after day. The country may register a fresh outbreak, just like Europe. Law breakers will always be out there, as well as indifferent people who do not care about their neighbors, relatives, and friends. Committed citizens are obliged to urge them to behave responsibly, in order to protect ourselves," she emphasized.

The health sector's head warned that if people do not behave responsibly during these weeks —in which lockdown restrictions have been relaxed— the measures will become stricter again.

"Development and economic growth are impossible without health; it is important that everyone follows the rules. If a second coronavirus wave hits Peru, those who tested negative are going to be at risk," she noted.

According to the minister, the involvement of the community and multisectoral efforts are important at this moment.

Therefore, the Ministry of Health (Minsa) will provide vaccination and treatment of anemia for children benefiting from the National Program of Support to the Poorest "Juntos" (Together), in order to strengthen early childhood development.

In this sense, Development and Social Inclusion Minister Patricia Donayre highlighted that this is the first time that Juntos is implemented in urban areas, where poverty has expanded.

The interventions will kick off in Lima's San Juan de Lurigancho district to reach more than 27,000 people. Children will receive vaccines and iron supplements, which will ensure their optimal growth and development.
