Peruvian Culture Minister Susana Baca was named Chair of the Inter-American Committee on Culture of the Organization of American States (OAS), during the Fifth Inter-American Meeting of Ministers and Highest Appropriate Authorities of Culture.

Baca was elected by the Culture authorities of the OAS member states after giving her proposal to understanding culture, not only through a traditional perspective but through ancestral knowledge, common to the cultural diversity of Peru and the Americas.

After learning the results of the election, the culture minister thanked all the Inter-American delegations for the vote of confidence. In addition, she mentioned that Peru will work together with all the member states to recognize the importance of culture as a promoter of social inclusion.

The OAS Fifth Inter-American Meeting of Ministers and Highest Appropriate Authorities of Culture, held in Washington, United States, on November 9-10 and which was also chaired by the Peruvian minister, is the highest hemispheric forum on the subject.

During the two-day event, various topics related to culture and its value as a tool to strengthen social inclusion and development were addressed.

The Inter-American Committee on Culture, or CIC, is a body for discussion at the technical-policy level. Its main function is to follow the implementation of the mandates of the Declarations and Plans of Action of the Ministerial Meetings on Culture, as well as of those that emanate from the Summits of the Americas.
