Culture Minister Alejandro Neyra on Tuesday affirmed that the Address to the Nation delivered last night by President Francisco Sagasti —regarding the modernization of the National Police of Peru— seeks to rebuild citizens' trust.

In his speech, the Head of State announced a set of measures to modernize the police, in defense of citizens' rights, internal order, and public security.

"I think the clamor and feelings of the population, as well as of citizens, are reflected in the changes he (the President) announced yesterday, with this base commission that —in 60 days— will yield effective results," Neyra told TV Peru.

"In addition to the changes in high-ranking police positions, the message here is to once again rebuild citizens' trust in the work of the Interior Ministry and the National Police of Peru," he stated.

In this sense, the minister explained that such message is in line with President Sagasti's plan to restore citizens' trust, looking to commemorate the Bicentennial of the Independence of the Republic in 2021 and moving in the hope for a better country.

Challenges

The government official pointed out that the Ministry of Culture has several challenges under this transition Government, adding that he had talked with both President Sagasti and Prime Minister Violeta Bermudez about the need to give continuity to some of the actions that were underway.

"Basically, we talked about the economic support to reactivate the cultural sector and the support to cultural workers, which has been provided through financial grants and —this year in particular due to the pandemic— through the budget settled by Urgency Decree No. 058," he explained.
