The Peruvian Exporters Association (Adex) on Wednesday reported that New York Mayor Eric Adams recently declared himself a great consumer of Peru's maca.

Adex Chairman Julio Perez Alvan asked the mayor to consider Peruvian products for the healthy projects that the authority has been promoting for years with the aim of guaranteeing food security for his fellow citizens.

This meeting was held within the framework of activities carried out by the guild on the occasion of
Adex's 50th Anniversary.

At the event, Mayor Adams was delivered several value-added Superfoods: quinoa cookies; instant quinoa; chocolate bars made with 70% cacao; organic kiwicha; sacha inchi and chestnut oil; organic chia and maca; among others.

Last year, the mayor signed two executive orders, the first to allocate part of tax revenue to improve (purchase, prepare, and serve) food at public schools and hospitals, day care centers, shelters, juvenile detention centers, and prisons, Adex specified.

The second aims to make the purchase of food and its impact on the city's economy and environmental sustainability transparent, the guild added.

"All city agencies promote a healthy lifestyle," Adex noted in a release.

The United States is the main buyer of Andean grains, such as quinoa, giant white corn, and kiwicha, just to name a few. Those dispatches can continue to grow.

Only in the first quarter of 2023, shipments to that particular market totaled US$7.948 million, Adex noted.

"It was a productive meeting, we not only introduced our guild, as well as the directors who accompanied us (chairs of the Pisco, Agroindustry, Jewelry, Goldsmith, Clothing, Services, and Forestry Committees, among others), but we also highlighted our country's stability and potential," Perez Alvan said.

Similarly, he highlighted the great Peruvian biodiversity and its role as a producer and supplier of Superfoods that are characterized by their nutritional properties.

"We have thousands of species of native plants with nutritional, medicinal, and ornamental uses. We gave him (Mayor Eric Adams) several value-added Superfoods; he not only tasted the quinoa cookies, but he declared himself a great consumer of Peruvian maca," the Adex chairman expressed.

The New York mayor was also told that Peru is a major producer and exporter of minerals, particularly silver; as well as of blueberries, grapes, and asparagus as the outcome of an agro-industrial miracle, despite the fact that they are grown on the coast, which is indeed a desert.

Other activities

Another Adex activity in New York City was the forum on the perspectives for Peruvian economy and trade.

The event saw the presence of Peruvian Economy-Finance Minister Alex Contreras; Central Reserve Bank (BCR) Governor Julio Velarde; PwC Peru Country Senior Partner and American Chamber of Commerce of Peru (Amcham Peru) board member, Orlando Marchesi; plus several directors of business guilds.

They also met with representatives of Help Peru, the Peruvian American Chamber, the Americas Society/Council of the Americas, and Peru's Trade Office in New York (Ocex New York).
