The representative of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in Peru, Ernesto Fernandez, highlighted and praised the work carried out by Peru in order to protect and preserve the Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu in Cusco.

"We must acknowledge and congratulate the protection and preservation works carried out so far by Peruvian authorities in Machu Picchu; we must continue this endeavor, and count on the full support of UNESCO to do so," he said.

During his visit to the "Manuel Chavez Ballon" site museum —located in the lower part of the Inca llaqta (Inca citadel)— Fernandez verified the work carried out by the authorities in this protected natural area.

As is known, said area houses the ruins of Machu Picchu —Peru's biggest attraction— which was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1983 and named one of the New Seven Wonders of the World in 2007.

The UNESCO representative's visit to Peru took place on Saturday, December 11, as part of the activities marking the 38th anniversary of the inscription of Machu Picchu on the UNESCO World Heritage List as a place of mixed, natural, and cultural importance.

In addition, he participated in the unveiling of a new plaque marking the 38th anniversary of the above-mentioned inscription.

The event also featured authorities from Cusco's Decentralized Culture Directorate (DDC), the National Service for Protected Natural Areas (Sernanp), and the Municipality of Machu Picchu.

The heads of DDC-Cusco, Magda Mateos, and Sernanp, Jose Ramirez, highlighted the coordinated efforts of both entities in order to conserve Machu Picchu in its dual status as a natural and cultural heritage.
