Peru has voiced its support to the efforts of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) to ensure that the COVID-19 vaccine remains a global public good,
Health Minister Hernando Cevallos said on Monday after
a meeting with PAHO Director Carissa F. Etienne in Washington D.C. (U.S.).
In statements to the press, the government official revealed that the meeting addressed "Peru's support to PAHO's position on the importance of maintaining the vaccine as a global public good that is not subject to market laws."
In addition, he addressed Etienne to ask
PAHO's support to facilitate the arrival of the vaccines in Peru through the COVAX Facility mechanism.
Cevallos indicated that, even though they have already been paid, a batch of said doses has not yet arrived in the country.
In this context, the minister affirmed that Peru expects progress in the talks aimed at reaching —through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs— an agreement with PAHO to promote the digitalization of the health system.
In addition, based on what was said in the meeting, the head of Minsa noted that a meeting of 34 health ministers from PAHO member countries —to address different issues— is almost a fact.
For his part, Foreign Affairs Minister Oscar Maurtua disclosed that the meeting was very useful and addressed various aspects, including the support to facilitate the arrival of vaccines through the COVAX Facility mechanism.
