14:36 | Chachapoyas (Amazonas region), Apr. 26.

The team of experts responsible for the Kuelap archaeological site has prepared a proposal to create a new internal tourist circuit, which seeks to guarantee visitors' safety and the protection of said monument situated in the rainforest region of Amazonas, the Ministry of Culture has reported.

The government agency stated that the proposal is being reviewed by the Decentralized Culture Directorate (DDC) in Amazonas region.

Afterwards, the document will be forwarded to the Decentralized Directorate of the National Civil Defense Institute (Indeci) in said region for its opinion.

The Ministry of Culture reported that the newly-appointed head of the Decentralized Culture Directorate (DDC) in Amazonas, Jesus Esther Lozano Maldonado, performed a comprehensive inspection of the archeological monument last Friday, April 22.

During the inspection, Lozano focused on the affected area, following the perimeter wall collapse on April 10, situated in the eastern sector of the Southern Perimeter Wall to determine the appropriateness of reopening the monument to the public.

As a consequence of such wall collapse, visits to Kuelap have been suspended until visitors' safety is guaranteed.

Kuelap is Amazonas' and northeastern Peru's principal tourist attraction.

Various international publications such as The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal refer to it as an important destination that stands out above the rest for its prominent architectural beauty, as well as its privileged view and geography.
