Tacna region Health Director Oscar Galdos has confirmed that the vaccination against COVID-19 of adults aged 50 and over began last Thursday at nine centers opened in that southern region.

The official argued that the decision to immunize people aged 50 and above was made because of the progress on the immunization of older adults.

"The vaccination of 74% of adults over 60 years of age has been achieved; that is why the Ministry of Health (Minsa) was requested to include people over 50 years of age, and the request was approved," he said.

Galdos stressed that this was possible thanks to the joint efforts undertaken by Minsa, the Social Health Insurance System (EsSalud), and the Regional Health Directorate (Diresa), as well as the important work carried out by nurses and other healthcare personnel.

The vaccination campaign will continue today and tomorrow at the aforementioned vaccination points.

Last week, Tacna started the vaccination process for the sake of citizens over 55 years of age.

On the other hand, the Diresa Tacna head stated that —during the past 15 days— there was an increase in confirmed COVID-19 cases; however, the levels do not reach those registered during the first wave.

"There is now an average occupancy of 150 beds. During the first wave, 262 beds were occupied (on average)," he stressed.

However, Galdos expressed concern about what is happening in Arequipa region, where the Delta variant has been reported and there is an increase in cases.

"We are concerned about Arequipa because of its proximity and we must reinforce prevention," he concluded.
