Peru: Stranded Peruvian Airlines passengers registered by Indecopi

10:00 | Lima, Oct. 5.

Dozens of Peruvian nationals affected by the cancellation of Peruvian Airlines flights at several airports in Peru are being registered by the State-run National Institute for the Defense of Competition and Protection of Intellectual Property (Indecopi) "in order to protect their rights as consumers."

Indecopi, as a national consumer protection authority, released a statement on Friday night saying "its Citizen Service Platform has been guiding and registering the citizens affected by the suspension of flights."

To that effect, the agency recalled that it has four customer service channels available to the public: telephone (01) 224-7777, toll-free number from a landline 0800-4-4040 for calls from regions, e-mail sacreclamo@indecopi.gob.pe, and a free app for Android phones "Indecopi Complaints."

Supervision and coordination

"From Monday, September 30, to date, Indecopi has deployed teams of inspectors at different airports across the country to provide passengers with guidance about their rights as air transport users in cases of delayed flights, canceled flights, compensation claims, and support, the assistance that should be provided by the airline under these circumstances," the statement reads.

"At the same time, Indecopi, through its National Consumer Protection Authority Directorate, has led to coordination with the General Directorate for Civil Aviation, since this is the civil aviation authority responsible for, among other things, monitoring the economic situation of air transport companies in order to guarantee their operation, according to Law 27261 (Law of Civil Aviation of Peru)."

Immediate measures

"Likewise, Indecopi has sent communications to Peruvian Airlines demanding the adoption of specific and immediate measures to comply with its obligations towards passengers who purchased tickets, as well as to assist the affected consumers, according to the provisions set forth in the Consumer Protection and Defense Code," the document explains.
