Peru: Health emergency violators to face criminal proceedings

The President of the Republic Martin Vizcarra on Saturday afternoon warned that the people who do not comply with the provisions —decreed by the Government within the framework of the state of health emergency due to Coronavirus (COVID-19)— will face criminal proceedings in Peru.

The Head of State indicated that those citizens will be included in a registry of offenders —which was already made official by means of a Supreme Decree.

The registry will be delivered to the Public Ministry, so that the institution can categorize the type of offenses committed, and the plaintiffs can bear the consequences of their actions.

"So, think twice. You will face criminal proceedings, your irresponsibility will not remain unpunished," he expressed.

To date, some 26,000 people have violated the measures ordered in the state of emergency such as: mandatory social isolation and immobilization. The regions of Lambayeque, La Libertad, Loreto, Piura, and Tumbes are the ones that register the largest number of detained citizens.

Moreover, top official informed that a Supreme Decree has already been published for the call-up of the Army Organic Reserve —graduates of the years 2018, 2019, and 2020— to support the efforts undertaken by the Armed Forces during the current health emergency.

Mr. Vizcarra said that some 10,000 reservists will join the Peruvian Army and start their service on April 1.

Remarks were made in a televised press conference, within the framework of a mandatory social isolation imposed to prevent the COVID-19 from further spreading in the South American country.

Initially set to last from March 16 to 30, the measure has been extended thru April 12.

On this occasion, the President was joined by members of the Council of Ministers. The event was held at the Government Palace in Lima.

Saturday marks the thirteenth day of mandatory social isolation.
