The Permanent Representative of Peru to the United Nations Office at Geneva, Ambassador Luis Chuquihuara, spoke in favor of security and peace in the face of the fragile international security framework emerged due to the recent escalation of tensions in Europe, in addition to the pandemic and climate change, which are undermining the sustainable development of nations.

At the opening meeting of the 2022 session of the UN Conference on Disarmament (CD), the Peruvian diplomat emphasized the need for the CD to resume its negotiating mandate following 25 years of paralyzed work.

The ambassador pointed out that the reinvigoration of the CD will constitute a clear message of the States' political willingness to strengthen the international architecture in the sphere of disarmament, non-proliferation, and arms control, as well as to counter the current environment of mistrust of the world's main military powers.

During the prelude to this inaugural session, Ambassador Chuquihuara presented to CD Chairman, Chinese Ambassador Li Song, copies of the credential letters that prove his designation as Permanent Representative of Peru to International Organizations based in Geneva.

Conference on Disarmament

The CD is the only multilateral negotiating forum on disarmament, in accordance with the mandate conferred by the UN General Assembly in 1978.

The follow-up on the work of this Conference is consistent with Peru's foreign policy in the service of peace —necessary for the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.

Peru is a fervent promoter of international law, multilateralism, collective security, and adheres to the principle of peaceful dispute settlement.
