Peru: South Korea has become third-major target market

10:59 | Lima, Nov. 12.

Peruvian exports to South Korea exceeded US$2.027 billion between January and September 2018, thus increasing 44.8% over the same period last year, Seoul-based Trade Office (OCEX Seoul) Advisor Joan Barrena informed.

Therefore, the Asian country has become the Inca nation's third-major target market, right after China and the United States.

It has also surpassed Switzerland which held the third place in 2017.

This outcome was due to greater demands for natural gas, minerals, as well as non-traditional products such as giant squid and chestnuts.

"This achievement is the result of the Peruvian Government's trade policy, boosted by the Foreign Trade and Tourism Ministry (Mincetur)," Barrena expressed.

Non-traditional exports break a record

Non-traditional shipments to South Korea reached US$262 million by September 2018, a 74% rise over the same period last year (US$151 million).

"This US$262-million figure marks a record compared to any exported value in previous years," he added.

Furthermore, the Inca country's agro-exports are catching up with fishery shipments.

Within this framework, giant squids (US$121 million, +128%); chestnuts (US$47 million, +116%); mangoes (US$15 million, +102%); canned vegetables (US$13 million, +229%); bananas (US$9 million, +65%); grapes (US$7 million, +34%); and shrimps (US$6 million, +30%) stood out.
