A delegation of
Korea's Official Development Assistance (ODA) has visited Peru in order to strengthen, as well as expand cooperation in science and marine technology.
The visit took place within the framework of the project for the creation of the future Research Development and Innovation Center for marine aquaculture in Peru.
This center has garnered the interest of
South Korea, as this is the fourth-largest destination for direct human consumption products and has seen an increase of over 100% in the consumption of Peruvian frozen prawns between 2016 and 2017.
The aforementioned project is aimed at supporting the scientific and technological research of marine species, which are commercially important for aquaculture, through the implementation of the Research Development and Innovation Center for marine aquaculture in Peru.
Korean officials are set to visit coastal marine zones in Casma (Ancash region) and Sechura (Piura region) to identify and select the location of the aquaculture research center.
It must be noted that within the framework of the Peru-South Korea Free Trade Agreement (FTA) —signed in 2011— the main frozen seafood products consumed in the Korean market over the past seven years include prepared, frozen, and canned giant squid; frozen eel; frozen round prawn; and frozen fish fillets.
