Peru requests provisional arrest with a view to extraditing ex-First Lady Karp from U.S.

17:30 | Lima, Dec. 17.

The Peruvian Judiciary's Fourth Criminal Chamber of Free Prisoners requested U.S. authorities to provisionally arrest former First Lady Eliane Karp with a view to extradition in the Ecoteva case probe.

According to the judicial resolution obtained by El Comercio newspaper, the Chamber made the same request —to Israeli judicial authorities— for Alejandro Toledo's ex-presidential security team chief Avraham Dan On.

Both requests shall be reviewed by the Supreme Court, which will decide whether or not to formalize the extradition of Karp and Dan On.

The Court sent an official letter to judicial authorities in Israel, where Dan On currently resides. Likewise, it stipulated the creation of an active extradition notebook so that he may appear before the Peruvian justice.

The aforementioned daily recalled that Peru has no Extradition Treaty with Israel, so the request for Avraham Dan On invokes the "principle of reciprocity."

In addition, the Chamber issued a second resolution declaring Alejandro Toledo, Eliane Karp, and Dan On defendants not present, for being reluctant to appear before Peruvian courts.
