Peru Prosecutor affirms document leak seeks to hinder agreement with Odebrecht

Lava Jato Case Prosecutor Jose Domingo Perez on Tuesday affirmed the leak of some pages from the preparatory collaboration agreement with Odebrecht seeks to hinder the accord with the Brazilian company.

"(…) However, the Prosecutor's Office, the Attorney's Office, and the firm are willing to conclude the collaboration process," Perez told Santa Rosa Radio.

The prosecutor indicated that —if the collaboration agreement were hindered— it would be more difficult to press charges for money laundering offenses and obtain a guilty verdict against the accused ones.

Likewise, he pointed out the accord with Odebrecht is important, since the company has provided not only testimonies but also documents revealing deposits in foreign bank accounts.

According to Perez, the leak of some pages of the accord confirms that there are indeed informants within the Prosecutor's Office who are not carrying out their tasks properly.

Furthermore, the prosecutor said the security deteriorated during Pedro Chavarry's tenure as Attorney General. However —due to this event— monitoring will be strengthened, and he will demand for a reassessment of the staff.

When asked about the criticism towards the agreement with the construction firm, Perez reaffirmed its goal is to ensure the correct prosecution of corrupt people in the Inca country.

Plus, the civil reparations amount was set in accordance with the law approved by Congress.

Odebrecht

As is known, the Brazilian construction giant admitted to having paid millions in bribes to government officials in Peru, in order to secure public-works contracts.

As a result, Odebrecht benefited from over US$143 million between 2005 and 2014 in Peru, according to the U.S. Justice Department.

In addition, four ex-Presidents have been linked to the Brazilian company such as: Alejandro Toledo (2001-2006), Alan Garcia (2006-2011), Ollanta Humala (2011-2016), and Pedro Pablo Kuczynski (2016-2018).

Former presidential candidate Keiko Fujimori —currently under preventive detention— also allegedly received money from Odebrecht for her 2011 campaign.
