Peru: President's proposed reforms to improve country's competitiveness

Economy and Finance Minister Carlos Oliva on Tuesday noted that President Martin Vizcarra's reforms will raise Peru's competitiveness and improve the quality of life of its citizens.

"The reforms will have a positive impact on the country's competitiveness and on Peruvians' well-being since they will lead to progress (…) these reforms represent a major inflection point to achieve the development all Peruvians want," he stated.

Reforms

The country has not carried out important reforms over the past 30 years, he said, and this is a great opportunity to do so and improve its prospects for the next decades.

"We fully support what President Vizcarra has proposed. Our Government is undertaking a frontal fight against corruption and is in favor of institutions," the official emphasized.

Institutionalism and fight against corruption are the two pillars of this administration's policy, as announced by a supreme decree a few months ago.

"These two pillars are very important. We believe Peru is getting a great opportunity to implement important reforms," he underlined.

Corruption

In recent years, the country has dealt with high-level corruption, which came to light after the release of audio recordings involving Judicial Power's officials, the minister said.

He referred to the political discussion around the reforms, recognizing it as a great opportunity to improve and to put political noise aside.
