Peru President: Youth electoral participation involves more than voting

17:15 | Ilo (Moquegua region), Oct. 11.

President Martin Vizcarra on Friday called on young people to participate in the coming parliamentary elections —slated for January 26— not only as voters, adding that over 1 million Peruvians residing abroad will be able to exercise their right to vote.

"We all have to make our utmost effort to ensure fair and transparent elections on January 26, so that youth can be represented. I encourage youngsters to participate, but not only as electorates," the Head of State expressed.

According to him, the National Election Board (JNE) will determine the regulatory framework for the electoral process.

In this sense, the top official said that the new regulations —proposed as part of the political reform passed by Congress— will not be applied in this election.

In addition, the statesman underscored JNE's announcement that Peruvians living abroad will be able to participate in the upcoming parliamentary elections.

His remarks were made after the inauguration of the 1st International Conference on Artisanal Fishing in Ilo (Moquegua region).
