Peru: President Vizcarra addresses the nation

The President of the Republic Martin Vizcarra currently addresses the nation, following the decision made by Congress to grant the confidence vote to Prime Minister Walter Martos' Cabinet.

The event takes place at the Government Palace in Lima.

After a 12-hour debate, Parliament on Tuesday night granted its confidence to the ministerial team, which received 115 votes in favor, 5 against and 4 abstentions.

Within this framework, the Cabinet chief reaffirmed his commitment to working with Parliament for the sake of the most remote communities that are currently affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

As is known, Walter Martos was sworn-in as Prime Minister on August 6 to replace Pedro Cateriano in the post after Congress' majority rejected the confidence vote requested by the former Cabinet chief on August 4.

In accordance with Article 130 of the Constitution, the Prime Minister must attend Parliament —joined by his Cabinet— to present the Government's general policy and the principal measures pursued by the Executive Branch.

It must be noted that Peru is currently under a state of emergency imposed to prevent the COVID-19 from further spreading.
