Peru President urges Congress to act fast

16:00 | Arequipa (Arequipa region), Aug. 14.

Peruvian President Martin Vizcarra on Tuesday demanded Congress to speed up the accusations filed against magistrates, in order to make the necessary changes in the Public Ministry and regain citizens' trust.

Among the constitutional accusations presented at Parliament, one of them is against the nation's newly-sworn-in Attorney General Pedro Chavarry.

In his speech, the Head of State reaffirmed his administration's commitment to fighting corruption "no matter who falls."

He went on to add self-criticism —within the Public Ministry— is necessary due to its main authorities' actions.

"(…) It can't be possible that in the exact moment we need to regain trust in our institutions, there's one institution from the justice system that can't be trusted by the population. We need to make changes," Vizcarra underlined.

According to the statesman, the reform projects introduced by the Executive Branch mark the beginning of much-needed changes in the Inca country.

"I ask the branches of government, and most important, the people to be aware of what we're doing and support us firmly in order to achieve our goal," the statesman remarked.

"We can fight corruption and eliminate it, but we must do that together," he concluded.

Remarks were made during Arequipa's 478th-anniversary celebrations.
