Peru: President Sagasti meets with UN Human Rights mission officials

The President of the Republic Francisco Sagasti and Foreign Affairs Minister Elizabeth Astete met with Jan Jarab, head of the United Nations Human Rights Mission in South America, and Igor Garafulic, Resident Coordinator of the UN in Peru.

"We thank the frank dialogue to evaluate the impact of political crisis on human rights," the organization posted on Twitter.

This event was held at the Government Palace in Lima on Friday.

The UN Human Rights Mission in South America began a visit to Peru in order to assess the human rights implications of a political crisis, the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) in Peru reported on Wednesday.

Last Tuesday, the hosting country's Foreign Affairs Ministry confirmed the deployment of this ad hoc observer mission, following an invitation by the Government of Peru.

As is known,

two young men died as a result of pellet shots to their bodies during the protests held in Lima on November 14. In addition, there were several injured and missing people.

The first fatality was 22-year-old Jack Bryan Pintado Sanchez, who suffered gunshot wounds.

The second one, Inti Sotelo Camargo —aged 24 years— was admitted to a hospital with gunshot wounds to the chest at heart level.

It must be noted that those demonstrations prompted the resignation of former President Manuel Merino.
