Peru President: Population should not be feared

18:09 | Piura (Piura region), Sep. 19.

Peruvian President Martin Vizcarra on Wednesday said the population should not be feared but joined to work together.

"Today, Congress has the great responsibility to deliver a vote of confidence in four constitutional reform projects and make them viable," the Head of State expressed.

Likewise, lawmakers are expected to "let people voice their opinion through a referendum," he added.

According to Vizcarra, citizens should not be consulted only at election time —every four or five years— but in the fight against corruption and in the endeavour to strengthen institutions.

The Peruvian leader stressed the population demands a fight against this scourge, and the Executive Branch agrees with them.

"We may have different priorities (…) but when it comes to fighting corruption we are all on the same side. Plus, we want to eradicate corrupt people with your help," President Vizcarra stated.

Additionally, bad people have to be put aside in order to rely on solid and trustworthy institutions.

"The debate at Congress is extremely important (…). I'll be waiting for the voting results," he concluded.

The remarks were made while delivering rehabilitation works in Piura region.
