Peru President: Localized quarantine does not mean quarantine is over

The localized quarantine —which kicked off in Peru today— does not mean the quarantine has come to an end, but rather a change in strategy that demands continued safety measures, President Martin Vizcarra affirmed on Wednesday.

According to the Head of State,

this new stage forces risk groups —such as adults aged over 65, minors under 14, and people with pre-existing conditions— to continue staying at home.

"It is a quarantine focused on vulnerable groups and seven regions, where it is general. The care remains in place," he underlined.

Likewise, the top official mentioned that the Economic Reactivation's Phase 3 —which began along with the targeted quarantine— implies a gradual process, so that citizens are not put at risk of COVID-19 infection.

In this sense, the statesman expressed confidence that by acting responsibly and using important tools —such as face masks— coronavirus cases will remain on the downward trend.

"Let's take care of ourselves, it is the best guarantee to defeat COVID-19," he stressed.

Lastly, the statesman mentioned that efforts are being undertaken, so that once the COVID-19 vaccine is ready, it can be made available for the benefit of the population.

As is known, the Government has extended the state of emergency from July 1 thru 31. It is characterized by localized quarantine in seven regions.

Arequipa, Ica, Junin, Huanuco, San Martin, Madre de Dios, and Ancash —which have registered increase in COVID-19 cases— remain under mandatory social isolation. In those areas, residents are allowed to leave their homes only to have access to essential services and goods and to carry out authorized economic activities.

Initially set to last from March 16 to 30, the nationwide quarantine came to an end on June 30. It lasted 107 days.
