President Martin Vizcarra called on Peruvians to work together in order to build legitimate judicial and political institutions that consolidate democracy and create better conditions for progress and well-being for the population.
His remarks were made Thursday during a ceremony marking the 25th anniversary of Transparencia (Transparency) —a civil, non-profit and nonpartisan organization founded in 1994 to work for the consolidation of democracy in the South American country.
In his speech, he referred to the audio recordings implicating the National Council of the Magistracy (CNM) members, and said nobody wants to go back to that past.
"No one wants more shameful audio recordings. No Peruvian wants to travel back in time. Today, more than ever, Peru needs an efficient, timely, transparent, and corruption-free judicial system," he affirmed.
As for the political reform bills submitted to Congress, he said the Executive Branch is
waiting for congressional approval and expects deadlines —set by the Legislative Branch itself— to be met.
Congress Chairman Daniel Salaverry extended the current legislative term until July 25, so that legislators can pass the
six political reform bills submitted within the framework of a confidence motion that was approved by Parliament on June 5.
So far, the Constitution Commission has passed three political reform bills, of which one was approved in plenary session.
