Peru President launches helpline for sexual harassment victims

11:06 | Lima, Oct. 15.

Peruvian President Martin Vizcarra presided over the launch of Linea 1819, a free-of-charge helpline aimed at reporting sexual harassment at work and providing a State response at an early stage.

Speaking at a conference along with Labor and Employment Promotion Minister Christian Sanchez, the statesman referred to an emblematic case that started as a workplace harassment situation and led to a subsequent incident of aggression.

"Such indifference is a form of violence. So, we must react as a State and in the workplace. Hence the importance of launching Linea 1819," he affirmed.

Besides bringing the State closer to them, this tool provides workers with an option to report and address violence at an early stage, he explained.

"As a State, we've categorized harassment as a crime. It used to be an offense not long ago. Therefore, we need a complaint to proceed. Besides, we must facilitate contact with the population and victims," he noted.
