Peru President: "It's our duty to preserve and promote use of indigenous languages"

19:39 | Lima, Feb. 21.

Peruvian President Martin Vizcarra on Friday affirmed that all Peruvians must preserve and promote the use of indigenous languages with the aim of strengthening our identity.

"All Peruvians have the duty to preserve and promote the use of indigenous languages. Today, on the occasion of the International Mother Language Day, I reaffirm my commitment to further enhancing our identity," he said via Twitter.

Peru has 48 indigenous languages —grouped into 19 language families— which are spoken by 55 indigenous peoples.

Indigenous languages are all the languages that were spoken before Spanish arrived, which are preserved and used throughout the country.

All indigenous languages are the expression of the collective identity and of a distinct way of perceiving and describing reality and must, therefore, be able to enjoy the conditions required for their development in all functions.
