Peru President grants 7,500th house to Coastal El Niño victims

15:22 | Huarmey (Ancash region), Sep. 17.

President Martin Vizcarra on Monday handed over the 7,500th house built within the framework of Reconstruction with Changes program for the benefit of Coastal El Niño phenomenon victims.

As is known, northern Peru was hit by Coastal El Niño floods last year. Said weather event was characterized by heavy rains, landslides, and floods, which destroyed infrastructure and crops, leaving many citizens homeless.

Joined by Housing, Construction, and Sanitation Minister Javier Pique, the Head of State symbolically delivered the keys to the house —made of cement and brick, as well as with expansion options— to citizen Israel Panizo and his family.

"We are working, fulfilling the commitment, and we are delivering the 7,500th house. After a year (of Government) we will have the 20,000th house and by 2019 the last house will have been built," the leader expressed.

"The work continues, we won't stop and we keep serving the population, mainly the one affected by Coastal El Niño," he added.

During his speech, President Vizcarra acknowledged the corresponding building process for the affected people had been going slowly. Only 3,000 houses —of the nearly 50,000 needed—were constructed within one year.

"In half a year, we have built 4,500 houses, in addition to the 3,000 that had already been completed," the top official informed.

"It is clear that it would have taken us many years, had we continued with the same rhythm," he indicated.

In this sense, the statesman explained his administration found a problem concerning the assessment of affected people when he assumed the presidency.

"(…) 14,000 victims that weren't registered have been included, and we are currently including all the victims," Vizcarra assured the population.
