President Martin Vizcarra on Sunday expressed his gratitude to Peruvians for massively going to the polls and
embracing three constitutional reforms proposed in the 2018 referendum.
According to the Head of State, democracy has been strengthened thanks to the popular consultation. Within this framework, he committed himself to
complying with the results.
"The main focus of
this referendum is the massive participation of Peruvians. We commit ourselves to
respecting citizens' will (…)," the top official expressed.
During a session with the
Council of Ministers, the statesman stressed the Inca country is on the path towards implementing great changes.
"Thank you (Peruvian citizens) for trusting this administration. We won't let you down. In the next days, we will address the nation in order to define the Government's next steps aimed at
consolidating democracy and the
fight against corruption," he added.
Furthermore, the top official stated authorities' task onwards is to comply with the people's decision.
"There is much to do. We have always said this
referendum was incredibly important, but it does not change all things by itself. It is the beginning of a change we desire for Peru and all Peruvians," the Head of State concluded.
Remarks were made at Government Palace once the results had been announced.
As is known, President Vizcarra called a
referendum to submit four political-justice reforms for public consultation.
They were proposed by the Executive Branch and subsequently approved by Congress.
Last July, the release of audios containing phone conversations that involved judges, entrepreneurs, and CNM members led to a scandal in the justice system.
Therefore, the Vizcarra administration intends to implement a positive change in Peru with these reforms.
