Peru President: Citizens must vote in referendum

10:39 | Piura (Piura region), Nov. 14.

President Martin Vizcarra urged Peruvian citizens —once again— to go vote in the referendum on December 9, and to express their opinions concerning the four constitutional reforms submitted by the Executive Branch to Congress.

The proposed reforms address lawmakers' re-election, a bicameral legislature, political parties' private financing, and a reform of the National Council of the Magistracy (CNM) —recently renamed National Justice Board.

The Head of State pointed out the public vote —aimed at modifying laws— empowers the population.

"It is important that they (citizens) go to (the polls) for the referendum (…). We give people the power to change the Constitution," the top official expressed.

Likewise, he affirmed his stance on the vote is personal, and that he does not intend to influence the population.

"The people have the power to decide; it is important that they do so. The changes to the Constitution depend on that," the statesman added.

As is known, the Vizcarra administration has launched a crusade against corruption in the Inca country.

Remarks were made from northern Piura region.
