Peruvian President Martin Vizcarra on Friday called on polling staff members to fulfill their civic duty by attending the January 2020 parliamentary elections.

After opening the Tingo-Kuelap Cable Car System Boarding Station Highway in northern Amazonas region, the Head of State affirmed that citizens understand the importance of the upcoming election, which is aimed at choosing members of the first branch of government.

"The legislators who will represent all regions across the country," Mr. Vizcarra continued, noting he is confident that elections will be conducted objectively and transparently.

"We need the polling staff to fulfill this civic duty responsibly, and I am convinced they will do so," he added.

According to the Peruvian leader, people will let their voice be heard through a conscious vote in order to elect true representatives of the people at Parliament.

A total of 509,106 polling staff members will perform this duty at over 84,000 polling stations across the country.

Attendance is mandatory for all polling staff on election day in order to set up, open and close the polling station. Besides, none of the members are paid for doing so.

A few days ago, the National Office of Electoral Processes (ONPE) conducted the respective draw.
