The President of the Republic Francisco Sagasti on Thursday called on
to sign a pact for the improvement of public health in Peru.
The Head of State acknowledged that —despite efforts to improve hospitals and care, along with the sacrifice of health personnel— this has not been enough to contain the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.
According to the top official, the pandemic has proven that the State failed, and the sustained economic growth —which had occurred for several years— was not used to make adequate investments in the public health system or to rely on more specialized personnel.
"Assuming the responsibility we have in leading the State, I would like to extend a public apology to all the people who have lost a loved one or an acquaintance during the pandemic," Mr. Sagasti expressed.
Likewise, the statesman deemed as essential that whoever is elected at the polls, and all parties in the electoral race, strongly support this effort to improve public health.
Meanwhile, he underlined, his administration will continue working intensely and tirelessly to strengthen public health.
Moreover, he mentioned that —in recent weeks—
109 ICU kits have been delivered, adding that his administration will soon announce a new vaccination strategy to reach out to the entire country as more vaccines become available.
