The President of the Republic Pedro Castillo has denied that his government is considering a Congress shutdown in order to prevent it from passing a presidential impeachment motion against him.

In addition, the Head of State called on Parliament to work with the Executive Branch in favor of the country.

"At a difficult time for the country, with a crisis due to the fifth wave of the pandemic, I ratify my commitment to democracy, the rule of law and the Constitution," Mr. Castillo stated.

"I categorically reject that my government is plotting a shutdown of Congress to avoid an impeachment proceeding," he said on social media.

Likewise, the top dignitary called on the Legislative Branch and the rest of the institutions to maintain the broadest unity.

Said unity, he said, will enable them to work together to solve major problems, noting that they have been appointed to do so for a period of five years.

His remarks were delivered on Saturday evening via Twitter, after Defense Minister Daniel Barragan tendered his letter of resignation from office.

In this regard, Barragan affirmed that his resignation responds to personal reasons and that he thanked President Castillo for the opportunity to serve in said position

However, accounts of an alleged disagreement between him and the Head of State have been spreading on social media.
