Peruvian President Martin Vizcarra on Thursday announced the launch of a project —meant to supply natural gas to seven regions across the country— for the first quarter of the year.
According to the Head of State, the initiative will benefit Cusco, Puno, Apurimac, Huancavelica, Ayacucho, Junin and Ucayali, whose jurisdictions are contained within the country's southern macro region.
Peru's top official recalled that
Camisea gas comes from the south, and noted it is incomprehensible that such resource is unable to serve nearby populations.
"We are working on this project to correct such mistake, the failure of not serving the closest ones and the region where the natural resource is found," the statesman pointed out.
His statements were made during the natural gas connection ceremony for the 900,000th user of Lima and Callao, in Carabayllo district.
Vizcarra stressed that the Government's goal is to provide
natural gas —often praised as a clean energy alternative— to all regions of the country.
Proof of this, he said, is that natural gas users can reduce energy consumption costs by 50%, an advantage for both homes and businesses.
"We are working throughout Peru," he said, noting that the 900,000 natural gas connections in Lima and Callao imply a benefit for at least 3.6 million people.
"There are more than 4 million users at the national level, but bearing in mind the more than 30 million Peruvians living in the country, the target is still low. Our target for 2021 is 6 million users," he added.
