Peru President: Acts of a few will not overshadow the Army

13:06 | Lima, Dec. 9.

Peruvian President Martin Vizcarra on Monday affirmed he is confident that the acts of a few Army members will not overshadow the entire institution, adding the Army must always be transparent, efficient, and at the service of the South American country.

During the ceremony for the Peruvian Army Day and the 195th Anniversary of the Battle of Ayacucho, the Head of State expressed his full support for this institution, which "has always defended the national interests with honor and courage."

"I am sure that our heroes did not tolerate and wouldn't tolerate indiscipline, and even less acts of corruption. The Army is and should always be an institution transparent, efficient, and at service of the country," he expressed.

Last Sunday, the Corporate Prosecutor's Office Specialized in Corruption Crimes by Officials of Southern Lima carried out steps to preliminary arrest —for 10 days— some Army members, within the framework of an investigation on theft of fuel between 2013 and 2018.

In this regard, the Army Command supports the investigations and reaffirmed its commitment to combating corruption in accordance with the Government's policy, within the framework of the Plan for Integrity and Fight against Corruption in the Defense sector.

During today's ceremony, the top official stressed that —throughout history— the Army has contributed to making the nation greater through its commitment to the country's sovereignty.

Moreover, the statesman stressed that the Army is currently immersed in the process of institutional transformation with a view to the 2021 Independence Bicentennial in order to consolidate itself as an institution that is modern, humane, professional, and close to the population.

The President also said the Army is prepared to take on the new challenges throughout the country, after highlighting that it deploys numerous actions for development: it participates in the internal order, as well as in the fight against: terrorist remnants, illicit drug trafficking, and organized crime.
