Peru, Panama Presidents meet at Ibero-American Summit

Peruvian President Martin Vizcarra on Friday held a meeting with his Panamanian counterpart Juan Carlos Varela, within the framework of the 26th Ibero-American Summit.

The gathering was aimed at strengthening bilateral relations and cooperation regarding tourism, naval industry, and the fight against drug-trafficking.

Both Heads of State are participating in the Summit, under the theme "A thriving, inclusive, and sustainable Ibero-America."

The Inca country's attendance is aimed at boosting political and economic cooperation among Latin American nations, as well as Spain, Portugal, and Andorra.

Likewise, the top official participates in the I and II Heads of State and Government sessions, as well as the Pro-Tempore Secretary handing over and closing ceremonies.

The event places special emphasis on the search for mechanisms to complement the efforts undertaken by countries to fulfill the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

Furthermore, it addresses gender equality, rights of indigenous and Agro-descendent communities, people with disabilities, climate change, public administration, as well as international cooperation.

The Summit —held annually since 1991— is the Ibero-American Conference's highest decision-making body, convening Heads of State and Government of 22 nations.

As is known, President Vizcarra met with Guatemalan Vice-President Jafeth Cabrera last Thursday.
