The Ministry of Health (Minsa) on Tuesday reported that more than 7 million people had completed their vaccination against COVID-19, as it encouraged the rest of the population to close the circle of protection in the face of a possible third wave projected for the following month.

Health Minister Hernando Cevallos warned of the appearance of new outbreaks in the country and urged citizens to reinforce preventive measures against possible contagion.

The Cabinet member explained that new outbreaks have been detected, some of which generate a lot of concern, such as at the National Maternal Perinatal Institute, where there are 26 new cases among health personnel.

The third COVID-19 wave —previously scheduled for the end of September— will have as its main characteristic the presence of the Delta variant —the most contagious of all, said Dr. Antonio Quispe, spokesman for Minsa.

He reported that this variant has already been detected in 10 regions and will progressively extend across the country.

"Therefore, all Peruvians must do our part to help interrupt community transmission," he expressed.

Among those most affected by this new wave are unvaccinated citizens and those over 60 years with only one dose or suffering from any type of comorbidity.

The group of unvaccinated people aged between 40 and 50 —who suffer from any risk factors, such as overweight, diabetes, hypertension, cancer or other diseases— are also at risk.

The goal is to administer 600,000 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine across the country, of which 300,000 will be applied in Lima Metropolitan Area and Callao, while the remaining 300,000 in 15 regions.
