Peru: Over 5 million tourists expected next year after Lima 2019 success

11:00 | Lima, Aug. 13.

More than five million foreign tourists will visit Peru in the following year, after the successful organization of the Lima 2019 Pan American Games, the National Chamber of Tourism (Canatur) projected Tuesday.

"Our country is cementing its image as a friendly and megadiverse destination —suitable for tourists from all over the world due to its cultural background and natural attractions— thanks to the Pan American Games," Canatur President Carlos Canales stated.

He went on to say Peru owns a vast biodiversity and gastronomy that is recognized around the world, which is opening new tourist circuits and the possibility to attract more visitors.

"The quality of the Lima 2019 Pan American Games closing ceremony generated global expectation, with nearly 1 billion people following the sporting event until the end," he told Andina news agency.

The quality organization, he continued, has exceeded all expectations, which is confirmed by Panam Sports representatives themselves.

Quality content

In this sense, he underscored the quality of content shown at the ceremonies —amid a display of light, color and sound— which provided a broad overview of the Inca country's cultural background.

He thus reiterated tourism would expand at two-digit rates starting next year because of the strategy promoted by the Government in favor of this sector.

It must be noted the main sources of tourists to Peru are Chile, the United States, Australia, Canada, China, and EU countries.
