The Ministry of Women and Vulnerable Populations (MIMP) has decided to award the exceptional honor of the "Order of Merit for Women" to Peruvian athlete Gabriela Kimberly Garcia Leon, for her achievements in athletics at the national and international levels.

Such decoration was adopted by Ministerial Resolution No. 166-2022-MIMP published in the Official Gazette El Peruano.

The regulation states that Garcia's achievements motivate other women to participate in different sport disciplines and contribute to the removal of barriers hindering gender equality.

The Peruvian walker won two gold medals at the World Athletics Championships Oregon 2022 held in Eugene, Oregon, in the United States.

Garcia earned a gold medal at the women's 20km race walk in first place. Then, a week later, on July 22, she became world champion in the 35km race walk, finishing in 2 hours, 39 minutes, and 16 seconds —the third-best time in history.

Garcia, 28, is the first world champion in the 35km race walk, which has been introduced to the World Athletics Championships this year.

Additionally, she won Peru's first-ever gold medal at the World Athletics Championships after clocking 1hr 26min 58sec in the women's 20km race walk.
